Breaking News: Lincoln County Man Arrested After Fatal Bicycle Collision on NC 73

Lincoln County, North Carolina — October 1, 2025 — According to WCNC, a 23-year-old bicyclist lost his life following a hit-and-run crash along NC Highway 73, near South Pilot Knob Road.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded after discovering the victim, identified as Jaycob Neece, who had been struck hours earlier while cycling along the roadway. Neece was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the crash occurred when a 2014 Honda CR-V traveling along NC 73 collided with Neece. After the impact, the driver reportedly left the scene and continued into Mecklenburg County without stopping to render aid or contact emergency services.

Troopers later identified and arrested Brian James, 30, in Huntersville in connection with the fatal collision. He now faces charges of felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor death by vehicle. Authorities said James is being held in the Lincoln County Jail under a $40,000 bond.

Family members described Neece as a compassionate and devoted individual whose life was centered on caring for nature and animals. They shared that he cultivated a vibrant garden that served as a refuge for plants and wildlife, calling his home a “haven” for rescued creatures. Loved ones said he was known for his gentle spirit, tireless work ethic, and unwavering kindness.

Neece would have celebrated his 24th birthday on October 16.
