Collision Between Moore County School Bus and Truck Closes Road for Several Hours
August 28, 2025Whispering Pines, North Carolina — August 27, 2025 — According to the Sandhills Sentinel, a major crash involving a Moore County school bus and a Ford pickup hauling a tractor shut down part of Vass-Carthage Road.
The wreck occurred near Lees Branch Drive. Investigators said the Ford truck, which was pulling a trailer loaded with a tractor, veered out of its lane and struck a Union Pines High School bus carrying students.
The impact caused the truck and trailer to overturn, sending the tractor rolling toward the tree line. The bus swerved off the road and came to rest upright against several trees. Both vehicles narrowly avoided a large storm culvert running beneath the roadway.
Neighbors and passing drivers rushed to help within minutes of the crash, calling 911 and checking on the students and bus driver. Witnesses described the bus driver as calm and collected while ensuring the safety of the children. One passerby even provided bottled water to the students as they waited for emergency crews.
Authorities confirmed there were 21 people on board, including the driver. No serious injuries were reported, though several students were taken to the hospital for precautionary evaluation, either by ambulance or with their families. The bus driver also planned to undergo a medical check at a local urgent care center. The truck driver sustained minor injuries but declined transport.
A second bus was dispatched to take the remaining students home. In a statement, Moore County Schools reported that four students were taken to Moore Regional Hospital, while the others were released to their families at the scene.
The section of Vass-Carthage Road between Heritage Farm Road and Niagara-Carthage Road remained closed for about three hours while crews cleared the vehicles and investigated the scene.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol cited the truck driver for failure to maintain lane control. Officials noted that preliminary findings suggest the school bus driver was not at fault.
