Multi-Vehicle Collision on US-70 in Garner Sends Three to Hospital, Causes Major Delays
February 24, 2026Garner, North Carolina — February 23, 2026 — According to CBS 17, a serious early morning crash involving a commercial box truck and four passenger vehicles caused extensive traffic disruptions on U.S. Highway 70 Business East, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred during the height of the morning commute near Auburn-Knightdale Road. The North Carolina Department of Transportation issued an alert warning drivers that lanes were closed in the eastbound direction. Initial projections estimated that the roadway would remain closed for approximately three hours. By late morning, officials reported that one lane had reopened around 11 a.m., easing some of the congestion.
Investigators said the crash began when the box truck struck three vehicles from behind, then collided with a Ford Mustang. The impact forced the truck into the median, where it came to rest on top of the Mustang.
Troopers confirmed that three individuals were injured in the incident. The driver of the Mustang, a woman whose name has not been released, was trapped inside her vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency crews. All three injured parties were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released updates regarding their conditions.
Images from state traffic cameras showed significant front-end damage to the white box truck. The force of the crash also damaged a guardrail in the median. Additional vehicles involved in the collision were seen with visible damage along the roadway, and emergency responders were positioned on both sides of U.S. 70 Business East as crews worked to secure the scene.
Recovery operations required two heavy-duty tow trucks to remove the wrecked box truck and the crushed Mustang from the median. Traffic remained backed up for several hours while law enforcement and emergency personnel cleared debris and assessed roadway safety.
State Highway Patrol officials indicated that the driver of the box truck is facing traffic charges related to the crash. Specific violations have not yet been publicly detailed.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances leading up to the collision. No additional information has been released at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
