Charlotte Man in Wheelchair Dies Weeks After South Charlotte Hit-and-Run
September 18, 2025Charlotte, North Carolina — September 17, 2025 — According to WCNC, a 52-year-old man who was struck in a late-August hit-and-run crash has passed away from his injuries, the police announced this week.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that officers responded to a call about a pedestrian being hit near the intersection of Old Pineville Road and East Exmore Street around 10:15 p.m. on August 24. When officers arrived, they found Mark Hendel, 52, lying in the roadway with a wheelchair nearby.
Investigators determined that the driver who hit Hendel left the scene. According to witness accounts in an affidavit, the motorist stopped briefly at a nearby business to remove Hendel’s wheelchair from the front of his car before fleeing.
Hendel fought for his life for several weeks but died from his injuries on September 15.
Police identified the driver as 59-year-old Ioannis Vlahos. He was taken into custody and booked into Mecklenburg County jail. Court records show Vlahos faces charges including felony hit-and-run causing death or serious injury, driving without a license, and operating a vehicle without liability insurance. His bond has been set at $250,000.
