22-Year-Old Woman Killed in Catawba County Crash on I-40 West

Catawba County, North Carolina — August 1, 2025 — According to WSOC TV 9 and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a deadly crash on Interstate 40 West claimed the life of a young woman.

The incident occurred during a period of heavy rainfall. Investigators say a 2024 Subaru Ascent traveling westbound collided with a 2019 Honda HR-V in the left lane. The impact proved fatal for 22-year-old Gabriella Elise Cruz of Bryson City, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

The Subaru’s driver, 41-year-old Tracie Lynn Arnold of Apex, along with three passengers, sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.

At this stage of the investigation, authorities say there is no indication that impairment played a role in the collision. Charges may be filed pending further review.
