Community Remembers Lance Sotelo After Fatal Hit-and-Run on The Plaza

January 16, 2026

Charlotte, North Carolina — January 15, 2026 — According to WCNC, family, friends, and members of the community are grieving the loss of Lance Sotelo, a 25-year-old runner who was killed earlier this week in a hit-and-run crash.

The collision occurred near the intersection of The Plaza and East 36th Street, where Sotelo was struck while crossing the street during an evening run. Loved ones gathered at the crash site for a candlelight vigil, honoring his life and the impact he had on those around him.

According to his mother, Jeanne Sotelo, Lance had reached the intersection and was lawfully crossing when the crash occurred. She explained that he had the signal to proceed when a vehicle entered the intersection against the light and struck him.

Jeanne Sotelo described receiving the news of her son’s death as the most devastating moment of her life, saying the call informing her of the crash is something she will never forget.

Authorities later confirmed that Q’Laundra Hood, 28, turned herself in to police. She has been charged with felony hit and run, involuntary manslaughter, driving without a valid license, and failing to stop at a red light in connection with the crash.

Lance Sotelo was a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte, where he competed in cross country. His family described him as a devoted runner, a compassionate friend, and a cherished member of the LGBTQ community. He came out as a teenager and, according to his mother, was embraced by those around him for who he was.

His father, Jesus Sotelo, spoke about his son’s character and the pride he felt watching him grow into a person who positively affected so many lives. He said Lance was deeply loved throughout the city and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Following the vigil, attendees walked together to the intersection where Sotelo was struck, placing candles and standing in silence to remember a life cut short. The gathering reflected both the heartbreak of the loss and the strong sense of community that continues to surround his family.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
