Breaking News: Officials Identify Driver Who Died Following Three-Vehicle Collision in Oak Island
July 31, 2025Oak Island, North Carolina — July 30, 2025 — According to WECT News 6, authorities have released the identity of the driver who died after a three-vehicle crash last week.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection of East Oak Island Drive and NE 27th Street, according to Oak Island officials.
Upon arrival, Oak Island police discovered a head-on collision involving a Toyota Rav4 and a Jeep Wrangler. Officials reported that the driver of the Rav4, identified as 67-year-old Kathryn Scullion, was traveling eastbound on East Oak Island Drive when her vehicle crossed over the center line and struck the Jeep Wrangler, driven by 47-year-old Steve Settle.
A third vehicle, an Audi Q7 traveling ahead of the Jeep, managed to avoid a direct collision but sustained minor damage during evasive maneuvers.
Although the precise reason why Scullion crossed into oncoming traffic remains unclear, investigators stated there was no immediate evidence suggesting impairment was a factor.
All drivers were conscious when first responders arrived. Scullion was trapped inside her vehicle, requiring emergency personnel to break the rear passenger-side window to free her and provide medical treatment at the scene.
Both Scullion and Settle were transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Scullion succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while Settle remains hospitalized with ongoing medical care. Bottom of Form
