Greensboro, North Carolina — According to My Fox 8, more than a month after a crash involving a Greensboro police vehicle left 35-year-old Xavier Crosson critically injured, those closest to him are continuing to grieve the loss of a man they describe as a devoted father, son, and lifelong friend.

Crosson suffered severe injuries when the vehicle he was riding in was struck by a Greensboro police cruiser near the intersection of East Cone Boulevard and North O. Henry Boulevard during the early morning hours of May 3.

Authorities say former Greensboro police officer Haley Maeurer has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and speeding in connection with the collision. The Greensboro Police Department confirmed that Maeurer resigned last week.

Father Weeks After Collision

According to investigators with the High Point Police Department, Maeurer was responding to assist another officer at the time of the crash. Investigators reported that neither emergency lights nor sirens had been activated before the police vehicle collided with the other car.

Crosson and another occupant were inside that vehicle. Both were injured, and Crosson was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Upon learning what had happened, Ashley Barnes traveled from Georgia to remain by his side. Barnes, who shared a child with Crosson, said she spent his final days talking to him, playing music, praying, and introducing him to moments with their daughter.

She recalled seeing signs that made her believe he could hear her and described trying to comfort him whenever he appeared restless.

Despite early hope for his recovery, Crosson’s condition worsened, and he passed away nearly two weeks after the collision.

Barnes said the sudden shift from optimism to uncertainty left her struggling to process the loss.

The two had known each other since childhood, and she described Crosson as not only the father of her child, but also one of her closest companions for more than two decades.

As she continues to navigate life without him, Barnes said one of the most difficult realities has been adjusting to the absence of the everyday moments they once shared. She remembered his sense of humor, the conversations they had, and even the small things that used to annoy her, now memories she treasures.

Friends and family members say Crosson was deeply committed to his role as a father. Barnes said she intends to ensure their daughter grows up understanding who her father was and the impact he had on those who loved him.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
