Suspected Speeding and Impairment Lead to Deadly Interstate 40 Collision in Wake County
February 9, 2026Wake County, North Carolina — February 8, 2026 — According to the News Observer, a tragic early-morning crash on Interstate 40 claimed one life after authorities say a vehicle traveling at an excessive speed left the roadway and struck a disabled truck along the shoulder.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on the eastbound side of I-40 near the Jones Sausage Road exit, between Raleigh and Garner. Investigators report that a Lexus sedan veered off the right side of the highway and crashed into a box truck that had been pulled over while awaiting roadside assistance.
A passenger riding in the Lexus suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet publicly identified the victim. The Lexus driver was transported to a nearby hospital, though law enforcement did not immediately release information regarding the driver’s medical condition.
The driver of the box truck had reportedly been seated on the passenger side of the truck at the time of impact. That individual was also taken to a hospital and is believed to have sustained only minor injuries.
Troopers indicated that criminal charges are pending against the Lexus driver. Authorities suspect both high speed and alcohol impairment played a role in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle may have been traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour before leaving the roadway.
The wreck led to the temporary closure of sections of Interstate 40 for approximately three hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared debris.
