Drunk Driver Arrested for Crash Involving North Carolina

On Thursday night, February 23, 2023, WRAL News reported that North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore, and State Representative David Willis were returning to Raleigh from Wilson after several events when the vehicle they were traveling in was “rammed from behind several times” Mr. Moore’s spokeswoman, Demi Dowdy, said in a statement.

Security personnel was driving, Dowdy said, and Moore’s deputy chief of staff, Dan Gurley, was in the vehicle as well.

Police charged James Matthew Brogden, 38, of Goldsboro, with DWI, resisting an officer and damage to property following the crash, which occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Interstate 87 in Wake County.

Although Moore said, “I doubt he knew who we were, but when you’re moving at highway speeds … you can imagine the kind of things going through your mind at that point.”

In Friday’s news conference, Moore said the driver hit them at least three or four times at highway speeds, saying, “I’m just glad everybody’s okay,” adding he is thankful the car didn’t flip over or spin.

He thanked his driver, who he credits with staying calm and maintaining control of the car.

At Dewey, Ramsay & Hunt, P.A., our Charlotte car accident attorneys understand the dangers drunk drivers add to our North Carolina roadways, and know these incidents are highly publicized when political figures are involved.

Most drivers and/or passengers do not have access to drivers who are specially trained to avoid dangers like these on our North Carolina roadways. When their lives are impacted by impaired drivers, they should take important steps to ensure their safety is the priority.

What Should I Do If I Am Hit By an Impaired Driver in North Carolina?

Drunk and drugged drivers can cause catastrophic accidents throughout North Carolina because they are often speeding or otherwise driving recklessly, with little regard for other motorists. If you find yourself in a position where you are being rammed by another driver, call 911 immediately to get help.

If you can, provide the police with the vehicle and driver details, so they can look for the car, truck, or SUV, and hold the driver liable for your accident and injuries.

Pull over to the side of the road, if you are not forced off by the reckless driver and stay inside the vehicle until help arrives. Do not confront an impaired driver, or put yourself in a position where you can be hit standing outside of your car by the other vehicle’s driver.

Once help arrives, seek medical care right away and contact our skilled drunk driving accident and injury attorneys for help.
