Charlotte, North Carolina — October 1, 2026 — According to WMTW, a 22-year-old Georgia man is facing felony charges months after a crash killed former Cape Elizabeth standout swimmer Keegan McKenney.

The fatal collision occurred on May 10, 2026. McKenney, 22, was a passenger in a BMW that crashed in Charlotte. He died from his injuries, while the driver and another occupant survived and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Georgia Driver Charged in Charlotte Crash

Court records identify the driver as 22-year-old Burton Elijah Brinkman. According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department affidavit, investigators obtained a search warrant for Brinkman’s medical records after the crash. Those records reportedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of .18.

Brinkman has been charged with felony death by vehicle and felony serious injury by vehicle. Although prosecutors filed the charges in July, they arrested him on September 24.

Brinkman received a $25,000 secured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 15.
