Surry County, North Carolina — June 23, 2026 — According to WXII, two people lost their lives following a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a moped, and the driver of the vehicle now faces multiple criminal charges.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred along Red Brush Road near Sherry Lane. Investigators allege that a westbound Toyota crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming moped carrying two people.

The impact threw both occupants from the moped. The operator died at the scene, while the passenger was transported to a hospital and later succumbed to their injuries.

Authorities say the Toyota left the roadway, striking a culvert and mailboxes before the driver fled the scene. A nearby citizen reportedly helped law enforcement identify the vehicle involved, and investigators later interviewed the driver, who allegedly acknowledged operating the vehicle and leaving after the collision.

Following consultation with the Surry County District Attorney’s Office, the driver was charged with two counts of felony hit-and-run, two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving while license revoked, driving left of center, and operating a vehicle with unsafe tires.

Investigators have indicated that impairment is not believed to have contributed to the crash. The case remains under investigation, and the charges are allegations that have not been proven in court.
