Wrong-Way Collision in North Charlotte Leaves One Dead, Two Seriously Injured
March 19, 2026Charlotte, North Carolina — March 18, 2026 — According to Queen City News and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a late-night crash claimed one life and left two others with serious injuries.
Officers were dispatched to the 5900 block of Statesville Road, where they found two heavily damaged vehicles, a Ford Escape and a Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Ford was unresponsive at the scene.

Authorities identified the deceased as 49-year-old Donnell Devone Dixson, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the Toyota were both transported to a nearby hospital with significant injuries, according to Medic.
Preliminary findings indicate that Dixson was traveling in the wrong direction, heading northbound in the southbound lanes, when the vehicles collided head-on. Police noted that speed appears to have played a role in the crash. It remains unclear whether impairment contributed to the incident.
Southbound lanes of Statesville Road were temporarily shut down as investigators worked at the scene.
