Raleigh, North Carolina — July 7, 2026 — According to ABC 11, family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are remembering a couple who lost their lives in a tragic crash while traveling to the airport.

Authorities say Scott and Jennifer Christofferson were riding aboard a Fast Park airport shuttle with their young child when a vehicle allegedly ran a red light and collided with the shuttle, causing it to overturn.

Neighbors described the couple as devoted parents whose sudden deaths have left a lasting impact on those who knew them. One neighbor said the loss has been difficult to comprehend because it happened so unexpectedly.

Airport Shuttle Crash

Scott Christofferson had worked for many years as a pharmacist with UNC Health Rex. In a public statement, UNC Health honored his service and expressed condolences to his family, noting that he had been a valued member of both the Emergency Department and Pharmacy teams.

Scott’s sister, Brooke Christofferson, also shared a statement, saying the family is devastated by the loss of both Scott and Jennifer. She remembered the couple as adventurous, compassionate people who brought kindness to those around them.

Fast Park also released a statement following the crash, expressing sympathy for the Christofferson family and everyone affected by the tragedy. The company confirmed that the shuttle driver was not injured in the collision.

Police say the driver accused of causing the crash, 70-year-old Barry Hayes, survived and is recovering from his injuries. Investigators have charged Hayes with multiple offenses, including two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

According to the Erwin Police Department, Hayes’ family reported him missing the day after the crash, after he reportedly left a relative’s home in a family vehicle. Because family members reported that he had a cognitive impairment, a Silver Alert was issued before investigators determined he was the same individual involved in the Raleigh collision. The alert was later canceled.

Officials have emphasized that the Erwin Police Department is not leading the crash investigation and has not determined whether Hayes’ reported cognitive impairment played a role in the collision.

The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
